Pompey is a large part of Onondaga County, consisting of 66.5 square miles. Pompey is the highest inhabited spot in the county. The Township of Pompey, named for the outstanding Roman General and statesman, was established by the Commissioners of the Land Office in New York City on July 3, 1790. In 1794 Onondaga County was formed and Pompey was one of the original four Towns – Lysander, Manlius, Marcellus and Pompey. There are many recreation locations within the boundaries of Pompey, and also some neighboring facilities that are within a short drive. There are Onondaga County Parks which provide picnic facilities for both large and small, some cross country skiing, swimming and hiking as well.

Pompey Historical Soceity – The Town of Pompey Historical Society was established in 1976 as a result of the United States Bicentennial Celebration. The Town of Pompey Bicentennial Committee had planned two weeks of activities to celebrate this memorable occasion. The committee wanted to have lasting tributes after July 1976. These activities are made possible by donations, fundraisers and grants from government as well as private foundations and agencies.
Pompey Hill Fire Department – Pompey Hill Fire Department is a volunteer Fire Department located in the Hamlet of Pompey. Founded in 1946 for the purpose of fire protection. Pompey Hill currently has a team of over 40 active volunteers 1 career paramedic/firefighter,and offer an ALS service (the highest level of pre-hospital care available) to the citizens of the Pompey hill fire district.
Fabius-Pompey Central School District -The Fabius-Pompey Central School District is located in central New York, just 25 minutes southeast of the City of Syracuse. Residents of this area enjoy all the desirable aspects of rural living yet have easy access to the many cultural and shopping advantages of a large metropolitan center. While many residents are engaged in agricultural occupations, the District also serves as a residential community for many who commute to Syracuse for more urban occupational interests.
